Α21- Abolishing Injustice in the 21st century
A21 is an international non-profit organisation founded in 2008 in Greece who is currently operating in 13 countries to combat human trafficking. The name “A21 – Abolishing Slavery in the 21st Century” expresses the organization’s vision for a world without slavery. A21’s strategy to combat trafficking focuses on three key areas of action: Reach, Rescue and Restore.
REACH: A21 focuses on prevention and awareness about human trafficking through events, campaigns and educational programs aimed at the youth, the professionals, the general public and the vulnerable groups.
RESCUE: Since 2012, A21 operates the 1109 Human Trafficking Hotline. Through the 1109 hotline, callers are able to anonymously report potential trafficking cases or related suspicions, with access to more than 200 languages. 1109 call specialists process the data and forward them to the authorities to identify and rescue potential victims.
RESTORE: A21 provides to survivors of human trafficking access to housing, medical care, psychosocial support, repatriation, etc., according to their own needs, with the final aim of social integration. For the above purposes, A21 maintains a crisis shelter and a day center and cooperates with a large network of public and private organisations. Also, A21 seeks the prosecution of traffickers and the legal representation of the witnesses in court proceedings – ensuring that the case reaches the courts and that witnesses receive the necessary support.
