We shape our own digital game
Children and teenagers are encouraged to intervene in simple video game modes, through the coordinators’ instructions, in order to shape the characters and the environment of a game in their own way, to get acquainted with basic programming rules and to collaborate in the creation of complex audiovisual work. Initially, participants are introduced to the basic principles of a game in order to familiarize themselves with the structure of the video game and with the basic principles of programming. At the same time, they can choose from suggested books and comics, the environment and the heroes who will try to attach to the game (through photography, web searching, scanning, etc.). Then, with the support of the coordinators, they intervene in the creative environment of a video game (character format options, etc.), but also in its mode (rules, game levels, etc.). Each computer is used by a small group of participants, and at the end of each session, a “test” of the game is performed by a different group, in order to co-create narratives and exchange know-how. The video game will be posted on an online platform so the participants can play or show it outside. The activity aims at introducing children from different socio-cultural groups to the basic rules of programming, as well as their acquaintance with the video game as a cultural medium. It also aims to link the video game with content from other media such as a book or comics.
